Artist Joan Waters was chosen to create an installation for the Burton Barr Library in Phoenix. A combination of metal sculpture and painted canvas, the installation promises to be a sensory explosion of color, texture, light and form.
Waters will also build a public installation at Mesa Community College. Awarded an Innovative Project Grant, the permanent installation will be a metal sculpture at the southeast entrance of the campus consisting of organic shapes and welded pillars.
Finally, Waters will be traveling to Baltimore, Maryland for the installation of a welded sculpture at the office of Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma, a group of physicians, psychologists, social workers and human rights advocates who help survivors of torture and trauma. Begun in 1994 as a non-profit group, working to alleviate the suffering of those who have immigrated to this country after experiencing the horror and trauma of war and human rights abuses. The installation is part of Art Connection at Maryland Institute of Art (Waters’ alma mater).
Finally, Waters will also has an exhibit opening at Northern Trust Bank on May 6. As an art instructor, it’s been very exciting to track Waters’ art career and track her progress. It helps me be certain that what I’m telling the students is valuable.
