Today, we marvel at the roots of digital media. Early digital media is beholden to the Camera Obscura. Most fascinating is a visit to the working SanFran Camera Obscura at Cliff House. It provides a dynamic, live, multimedia experience (changing images, roar of the surf, squawk of the gulls, smell o’ brine). The original “must see TV.”

According to artist, David Hockney, early painting and drawing and painting was likewise impacted by the technology of the Camera Lucida. Another device that tantalized viewers with dynamic realism and altered our expectations of visual media. More history on these technological innovations can be found on the Eastman.Org site.

And, for a glimpse at early multimedia media, go to the site featuring an astounding collection of Early Visual Media.
