Screenings, Streaming & Preening

On April 29, 2004, in Media Arts, by Cyndi Greening

A picture named farmtech.jpgIn class tonight, we’ll be screening Paul DeNigris’ The Falls in preparation for his presentation NEXT Wednesday night. We’ll also take a look at MCC Art Instructor Joanne Caroselli’s’ Tony, Tony Stick Around. These independent digital films give you an idea of what is possible in contemporary independent film production.

Ross Ingle will then talk about how he uses streaming media on his website for his music. He’ll talk technical and aesthetics. We’ll also discuss the final student projects, the Michael Dean DVD and upcoming presentation and prepare for the end of semester!

And, from my home town, an exciting event this fall! Farm Technology Days will be held in late September. Ironically, in a meeting last night we were discussing how technology requirements are rising in every (academic) area. I see now I was terribly short-sighted. Obviously, it isn’t just limited to academia!

Historical Sundance

The Sundance Instititue has posted PDFs of Past Sundance Festival Selections. The PDFs are an alpha list of all films and directors. The lists are not separated by entry category nor do they contain other production data. They are also not “text” PDFs so the data cannot easily be imported BUT the summary is now out there.

Previous Sundance Winners can be found on Indie Internet Movie Database (Indie.IMDB.com). The entry page has the Grand Jury Prize but the link to the year, (2004 winners, for example) contains the full list.

My own Searchable Sundance is getting very close. I’ve been databasing like crazy and I’m nearing the point of being able to get it up on my site. This database will let you look at things like:

  • How many films has Steve Buscemi brought to Sundance?

  • How many documentaries has Nancy Schreiber shot?
  • Which films were in dramatic competition in 1987?
  • Who was on the jury in 2002?

It will have all of the data from the last 20 years … should be a valuable resource, no?

Application deadlines are upon us! Tomorrow is the deadline for the
19th Annual Sundance Independent Producers Conference. While it has a steep registration fee ($650), it offers the opportunity “to explore the issues of independent producing and to apply them to your own projects. It is committed to helping filmmakers find resources to develop their films and to enhance their options for production and distribution.”

Right behind it is the application deadline for the Feature Film Program on May 1st. The Feature Film program includes the Screenwriters Lab and Filmmakers Lab. It’s amazing to look at the Lab Projects produced to date. Some of the films include: The Laramie Project, Down to the Bone, Three Seasons, and Reservoir Dogs. Better get cracking!

Joan Waters Goes Public

On April 22, 2004, in FilmProd, by Cyndi Greening

A picture named joanpaints.jpg
Artist Joan Waters was chosen to create an installation for the Burton Barr Library in Phoenix. A combination of metal sculpture and painted canvas, the installation promises to be a sensory explosion of color, texture, light and form.

Waters will also build a public installation at Mesa Community College. Awarded an Innovative Project Grant, the permanent installation will be a metal sculpture at the southeast entrance of the campus consisting of organic shapes and welded pillars.

Finally, Waters will be traveling to Baltimore, Maryland for the installation of a welded sculpture at the office of Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma, a group of physicians, psychologists, social workers and human rights advocates who help survivors of torture and trauma. Begun in 1994 as a non-profit group, working to alleviate the suffering of those who have immigrated to this country after experiencing the horror and trauma of war and human rights abuses. The installation is part of Art Connection at Maryland Institute of Art (Waters’ alma mater).

Finally, Waters will also has an exhibit opening at Northern Trust Bank on May 6. As an art instructor, it’s been very exciting to track Waters’ art career and track her progress. It helps me be certain that what I’m telling the students is valuable.

Well, I’m quite excited. Michael Dean is coming to MCC to lecture on Do-It-Yourself Marketing for media artists, visual artists and performance artists. He’s got a handy DVD that shares a lot of economical and effective ideas. It’s called D.I.Y. OR DIE. He’s also written several books for budget-minded artists including $30 Film School, $30 Music School and the soon-to-be-released $30 Writing School. If you’re a visual artist in the Phoenix Metro Area, send an email for details.

Thank God it’s Friday! The best thing about some weeks is that they END! I’m feeling a bit like Hans Nyberg Ice Climbing in the Pyrennes … hanging on for dear life. He’s got an amazing site full of QuicktimeVR Panoramas from around the world. He’s also got a new product, the Panorama Backpacker so you can travel the world from the comfort and safety of your computer chair … or plan an exciting journey. Today, I’m thinking this would be a fun thing to do.
