Our current obsession with creativity is the result of our continued striving for immortality in an era when most people no longer believe in an after-life.

Whale Rider opened in Phoenix

June 29th, 2003 · No Comments

Whale Rider opened in Phoenix this weekend. Great film that won the International film award at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Time to get to the theatres!

The Last Roundup?, Laurie Fagen’s documentary was screened in Phoenix last week at First Studio. Shot on DV, edited using Final Cut Pro at Postal, a terrific post house (also located at First Studio, 631 N. 1st Avenue in downtown Phoenix.) Well-shot, nicely produced piece on a cattle round-up in the Arizona high country. It features rancher, inventor and helicopter pilot, Harry Robertson. Catch it when it makes the festival circuit.

Whale Rider opens in NY

June 6th, 2003 · No Comments

Whale Rider opens in NY and LA today. Great film that won the International film award at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Beautifully filmed tale about a Maori myth that explains the origin of humanity. I can hardly wait for it to get to Phoenix. Same for Capturing The Friedmans. A documentary winner at Sundance this year. Don’t miss these two!

A picture named mary_home_sm.jpgTwo more powerful documentaries that I’m hoping to see distributed are State of Denial about South African Leader Mbeke’s refusal to admit a link between HIV and AIDs and the horrific consequences for the citizens of South Africa. The other is Not My Flesh and Blood, the story of a family of special needs children. They announced a website at Sundance but I am unable to find it (yet). I’ll post it when I find it. Watch for these films!

Russian Ark did come to Arizona, to the Madstone Theater. That was at Telluride last fall and is finally getting distributed.

Here it is, the famous

June 5th, 2003 · No Comments

Christ of the Deep StatueHere it is, the famous Christ of the Deep statue in John Pennenkamp State Park in Key Largo Florida. Joan and I went snorkeling on vacation last week and I personally christened the statue. Who knew fish liked vomit so much?

We visited Key West, too. It was sooo much like New Orleans (What’s that smell?) The humidity was unbelievable. I felt like I was back in the primordial soup and longing to return to the water from which my ancestors emerged. It was ungodly.

We also visted Hemingway House in Key West, where he was inspired to write The Old Man & The Sea. There was no air conditioning so the whole place smelled musty and like decay. The overwhelming heat and deterioriation made the fatalism of his novels the logical consequence of life on a remote island. It didn’t seem like paradise.

I was reading the New York Times today. Another article about the foam tests with the shuttle. Also discovered they have a website about the investigation (Challenger Accident Inquiry Board). One of the key recommendations is that in-orbit imaging is standard in future missions.

Production Jobs in Film and Broadcast

June 3rd, 2003 · No Comments

So, it’s been two months since I logged in here. I started another film class last night so it seems like a good time to get this going again. I’m going to put up information for the class and try to set up a group blog for the sharing of information. Let’s see how we do. First, the important links!

Also, I spoke with Joanne Caroselli last night. She’s decided she’s going to shoot a film in July. She’s very serious about it … going to finish the “Tony, Tony” script she wrote. She’s looking for people to crew and participate. It’s probably deferred pay. I’ll get more information on it and post it here.
